Chet Waters asked:

Have You Experienced This With BMW?

After my friend Bobby Watson bought his first BMW, I remember him saying how much he enjoyed driving it. He became so enthusiastic about it that I thought for sure that he was on the BMW payroll. And to this day, I have never met anyone more excited about the BMW Brand. But the story doesn’t end here.

There is another side of BMW that Bobby made me aware of recently.

If you have the need to experience “real speed” beyond what you can do on the highway with your BMW, here is something that you need to check out. Bobby introduced me to the world of “Formula One” racing. And to my surprise, he told me that for over 50 years BMW has been associated with motor racing in one form or another. And when I thought about it, it seemed like a natural connection between BMW and “Formula One” racing.

As I found out being with Bobby, “Formula One” racing is wild. And the record books are filled with the many successes BMW has had in this sport. And it’s only right that they have achieved success because of the company’s total commitment to innovation and technology. It’s the core belief behind everything BMW.

Nobody just watches a BMW during a Formula One race.

You can’t just see it on TV or watch the cars zipping by you in the stands at the racetrack. Oh no. This is a participation sport. You go for the thrills, the excitement and the pure adrenaline “rush’ of seeing man and machine being pushed to their limits. All you have to do is ask two former BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers Sebastian Vettel and Timo Glock what it’s like to live this “on the edge” lifestyle.

And you thought that the only BMW made was what goes in your garage.

Here is something else that I would like to share with you that most BMW owners or wannabe owners don’t know. When it comes to endurance racing, BMW is definitely at the top of the food chain. Just imagine what it would feel like to be behind the wheel as your BMW, V12 LMR wins the legendary 24-Hour Le Mans race. Tell me that wouldn’t get you pumped.

Like a proud father showing off his first newborn, Bobby told me that 18 times in the Nurburgring 24-Hour Race and 21 times in the classic 24-Hour Spa –Francorchamps Race, BMW race cars have been in victory lane. Every time Bobby tells me these stats, there is a twinkle in his eye almost as if he had driven one of those BMWs to victory himself. And like all BMW enthusiasts, he never tires reliving the glory stories of past and present championships.

So don’t kid yourself.

If you own a BMW or will own one in the future, take my advice. Tell your significant other that your passion will most likely go beyond just your “street” BMW. Along with your purchase comes not only a tradition, but a lifestyle.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Kalin asked:

Karl Friedrich Rapp is the name of the founder of BMW - one of the biggest world wide car manufacturing companies. BMW or Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works) was founded in 1916 as a successor to the Rapp Motor.

Many people think that the logo of BMW comes from a spinning white propeller seen in the background of the blue sky. This may be so but in fact it is known that it also comes from the white and blue flag of Bavaria – the largest state of Germany. The capital city of the state is Munich and this is the place where even today we can find the BMW Headquarters.

In 1916 with the foundation of the company a contract was secured for building V12 engines. These engines were about to be used in the creation of the automobiles from Austro-Daimler. These 12 cylinders V engines were at first used in aircrafts which is the original plan of the BMW Company. Taking in account the time when the company was founded it was very likely for them to continue like that.

However in 1919 after the World War I and the Treaty of Versailles the production of aircraft in Germany was prohibited and that quickly changed the politics of BMW. They began making brakes for the Rail transport. Soon after that BMW was able to design a motorcycle engine which was used for the creation of a motorcycle called with the model name Victoria. However Victoria was not built by BMW but by another company in Nuremberg.

In 1924 BMW made a model of a motorcycle which was the first one they built - the R32. This was a turning point in the BMW history because it was a major achievement and for decades they used its technology – 500 cc engines cooled down by the air. Soon after that BMW added one new innovation – the driveshaft. It came to replace the chain for driving the rear wheel and became a mark of BMW for quite some time.

In the German city Eisenach in 1927 began the production of Dixi – under license but only a year after that the Dixi Company was bought by BMW and they began mass production together with the model Austin Seven.

When the World War I began BMW took its place in it because of the German army’s motorized division. They used BMW R75 together with BMW R12. Because of the high need of engines BMW note that period as highly profitable. BMW was the main supplier and even today words like Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht brings many memories. Some of the best planes in that historical time used the BMW aero-engines and till the 1945 more than 30 000 planes with these engines were manufactured.

BMW even made researches which enabled the company to make different jet engines for weapons. With the use of some men power consisting mainly by prisoners of the war BMW made many rocket-based weapons that were used in the war.

Soon after the creation of the rocket-based weapons parts of the company were bombed. Soviets razed to the ground most of the company located in eastern Germany and the base factory in Munich was almost completely destroyed.

After the war BMW was not able to quickly recover because of the need to rebuild the factory in Munich. After that when the restrictions from the Allies applied BMW was banned for three long years in which the company was forbidden from producing motorcycles until 1948 and cars until 1952.

In 1951 the Bavarian company was able to regain all trademarks and it looked like it was finally able to recover and start again from what was left. In 1959 Herbert Quandt became the “wheel” which turned the BMW around because he denied a deal with Daimler-Benz and soon after that he increased his share in the BMW Company up to 50%.

The name of Kurt Golda is stated as the man who incited Quandt to do this step and in the same year BMW began production of the BMW 700 which was based on the BMW 600. This small car used 2-cylinder, air-cooled engines and some years later it was renamed to “LS”. Coupe and some cabriolet series were also manufactured.

In 1963 BMW offered dividends to the shareholders of the company and in 1966 the factory in Munich reached its maximum capacity and BMW bought Hans Glas GmbH. This deal enabled BMW to use factories in Landshut and Dingolfing.

With some new style provided by Bertone in 1972 BMW began production of 5 new series and in the years to follow the company made a big progress in the market. For 6 years under the leadership of Bernd Pischetsrieder BMW was able to expand its deal in the market by buying from British Aerospace the Rover Group. Rover Group’s history starts in 1986 and till the moment when BMW owned it this company was able to achieve many things like for example the Rover 400 in 1990.

However the Rover was sold to Phoenix Venture Holdings and Ford Motor Company because of some years of losses for BMW. Jokingly the press called the Rover “The English Patient” after the release of the namesake film. This however was not very hard on BMW and they were spared from taking the blame. It looks like that even the British press was not very enthusiastic about the Rover.

BMW began production outside of Germany in 1994. New factories were made in South Carolina and even today the manufacturing of BMW X5 and BMW Z4 is made there. There are factories in some other places too like Oxford, Goodwood and others. After some time of assembly BMW began production in South Africa. Today BMW exports more than 50 000 3 Series vehicles yearly to Japan, USA, Africa, Australia and the Middle East.

In order to serve the market in Eastern Europe and Middle East BMW are planning to begin construction of a new plant located in Cyprus or Greece. A plant in Chennai, India already opened production in 2007.

Anthony Fontanelle asked:

Direct from its factory in the United Kingdom, BMW delivers the world’s first fleet of the world’s first hydrogen-powered emissions-free luxury saloons - the Hydrogen 7. The saloon is based on the chassis of the standard 7-series but its engine is designed to run on gasoline or hydrogen (bivalent). In hydrogen mode, the saloon emits nothing more than water vapor.

Next week, ‘Clean Energy’ will arrive to the UK with the rolling out eight BMW Hydrogen 7 cars. The virtually emissions-free luxury saloons, also flaunting enhanced BMW brake boosters and other power parts, form part of a total fleet of a hundred Hydrogen 7 models that are a major landmark in the automaker’s CleanEnergy programme. For the first time, Hydrogen 7 models have been delivered on the ‘standard’ 7 Series production line and will be used in normal daily driving in the UK.

Jim O’Donnell, the BMW UK’s managing director, summed up BMW’s milestones: “The arrival of our Hydrogen 7 cars could not have come at a better time. Politicians, business leaders, the media and consumers are engaged in healthy debate on the future of energy supply and use. Meanwhile, the automotive industry is committed to cleaner motoring, with a host of possible solutions available today and being developed for the mid- and long-term. BMW is at the core of the future of motoring with tremendous developments in petrol and diesel engines, hybrid powertrains and hydrogen technologies.”

O’Donnell concluded, “Our EfficientDynamics programme has introduced energy-saving technologies that break through the 60 miles per gallon and one hundred and twenty grams per kilometre CO2 barriers, our new diesels are cleaner and greener than many of today’s hybrids, yet power and performance in all of our cars has improved. Clean, green motoring can also be engaging and dynamic, and the new BMW Hydrogen 7 models epitomise that philosophy.”

The fleet of liquid hydrogen powered product lines from the German automaker is aimed at continuing its rigorous programme of driving activities on UK roads. According to BMW, the company will be in active service as support vehicles at a number of high profile events over the summer as well as transporting key participants at industrial, business and political conferences. A chosen group of high-profile VIP users will also take delivery of a car for short periods of time in order to experience the ‘normality’ of emissions-free motoring.

Uwe Ellinghaus, BMW UK’s marketing director, noted the importance of these hydrogen cars: “The age-old chicken-and-egg debate has now been resolved. BMW can produce hydrogen-powered cars on the production line and the time is right to engage with business leaders and politicians in order to progress the development of a hydrogen highway - the fuelling and infrastructure requirements that make hydrogen a viable fuel for the consumer.”

He added further, “We hope that experiencing these cars in normal driving situations will encourage people to join the debate. Without doubt, it will take many years for a suitable infrastructure to develop that makes hydrogen power an easy option for the consumer, but all indications are hydrogen is the only genuine long-term sustainable power source for cars. Public hydrogen filling stations have been developed in Germany and California, and the presence of BMW Hydrogen 7 cars in the UK will undoubtedly bring the future closer for British drivers.”

The BMW Hydrogen 7 cars will be seen in action at a number of high-profile events starting on 22 May at the SMMT Test Day at Millbrook followed by the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. The Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Revolve alternative fuel Brighton to London drive event are also in the itinerary. The cars will also be used in a number of environmental summits and conferences.

Powered by a 260 horsepower 12-cylinder engine unit, the Hydrogen 7 accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 9.5 seconds before going on to an electronically limited 143 mph top speed. With its unique dual power engine, the driver of a Hydrogen 7 can shift quickly and expediently from hydrogen to conventional gasoline power at a simple push of a steering wheel-mounted button.

The dual power technology employed in the car means it has a cruising range in excess of 125 miles in the hydrogen mode with a further 300 miles under gasoline power. To make the car more potent, the BMW Hydrogen 7 features a conventional 74-litre petrol tank and an extra hydrogen fuel tank holding up to eight kilograms of liquid hydrogen. The flexibility will enable the driver of a BMW Hydrogen 7 is able to use the car at all times, even when the closest hydrogen filling station is out of range. To support BMW’s plans for a cleaner environment, a filling station has been developed in Wembley.

For pure driving bliss, engine performance, power and torque, the Hydrogen 7 ensures unbending characteristics notwithstanding which fuel is in use. The driver can move between the two fuels without any effect on driving performance or behavior of the car. The Hydrogen 7 always gives priority to the use of hydrogen but, should this run out, it automatically switches to petrol power.

Unlike other hydrogen concept cars, the BMW Hydrogen 7 indicates the automaker’s milestone in the auto history. It is a full production ready vehicle, which has complied with all the stringent processes and final sign-off criteria that every current BMW product line undertakes.

Ever wondered why the automaker ventures on hydrogen fuel? The BMW Group has been committed to hydrogen technology as a means of limiting hazardous vehicle emissions, in particular carbon dioxide emissions, for over two decades. Unlike fossil fuels and conventional gasoline, hydrogen is available in virtually endless supply when renewable energies such as wind, solar and wave power are used to produce the liquid hydrogen which can be used as fuel.

Stored in a especially designed tank which keeps the fuel at a pressure of 3-5 bar and a constant temperature of –250°C, liquid hydrogen delivers significant advantages in energy density than other possible alternative fuel sources to improve the cruising range of the car.

The German automaker does not intend to come to a halt when it comes to developing efficient and powerful gasoline engines that considerably decrease fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Together with clean performance diesel cars and the technologically advanced hybrid systems currently under development, the automaker has a clear-cut strategy for sustainable mobility with hydrogen as the ultimate goal.

Chet Waters asked:

How Your BMW Is Born And Why It’s Important To You

If safety, reliability and value ,plus great design and performance, are important to you when deciding which luxury car to own—then this is something you need to understand. All car companies talk a good game. But very few actually deliver on their long term promises.

Picture this——-

Somewhere in Germany an automotive engineer, let’s call him Hans, sits waiting in anticipation of the news that will surely change his life. News that will definitely alter the lives of millions of people worldwide. His hands are sweating. His heart rate is elevated. The pupils in his eyes are dilated. It’s not from fear, but a heightened sense of things that dominate his mind. He’s about to find out if the answer is “yes” or “no”. His mouth is dry as he waits restlessly for the decision that he longs to hear.

Sort of reminds you of the feelings most parents have while waiting to find out if they are going to have a little “bundle of joy” added to their family doesn’t it?

Have you ever felt this way?

Finally the moment arrives. The phone rings as Hans stands in his office surrounded by his “team” of seasoned professionals. As he answers the phone he hits the button for the speaker. He wants his entire team to hear the news all at the same time. Be it good or bad. They are in this together.

As the voice on the other end of the phone says, “Congratulations”, the entire team erupts in celebration. This is the moment that Hans and his team have been waiting for at BMW. After more than a year in development, “the team” gets the final approval to start production on their new model BMW that they envisioned. All their hard work has paid off. And like any proud parent, Hans is beaming with pride for himself and his team.

So what does this mean to you?

The fact is, when you invest in your new BMW not only do you get a great car, but also you get peace of mind. Why? Because Hans and thousands of other engineers dedicate their lives to making you and your family safe, secure and happy in your very own BMW. And like any human birth, the birth of your BMW can be long and sometimes difficult.

Once your BMW comes off the assembly line the journey is just beginning. Because your BMW isn’t really “born” until it has passed the torture test by surviving the most intense new car testing in the world.

This is where the big boys really get tested.

The Nuerburgring Track , affectionately referred to as “The Green Hell”, in Germany is where all new BMW’s are tested. In fact, according to company information, BMW is the ONLY car company which tests every new car it builds to the unique stresses of “The Ring”.

Designed by Eichler Architekturburo, the track was initially built to increase tourism, provide jobs and show-off to the world German automotive engineering accomplishments. What began in the fall of 1925 and finished in the spring of 1927, has become this grueling 17.5 mile track which includes 33 lefts turns and 40 right turns. The track even narrows to eight meters in some parts making it even more difficult for car and driver.

Famed race car driver Jackie Stewart named the track “The Green Hell”.

Because each new BMW is pushed to its physical limits while being tested, you can always feel confident that your BMW experience will be world class. In fact, BMW was the first car company to open a permanent test center at “The Ring”.

Just for a minute, imagine yourself behind the wheel of a new BMW as it strives to survive the 17.5 mile track at “The Ring”. Because this track was designed to make both car and driver be tested to their limits, only the best and strongest will continue on their journey. After all, if you have a demanding lifestyle, your BMW must be equally up to the task.

Like any new “bundle of joy”, feel free to experience family pleasures because now you know, “How Your BMW Is Born And Why It’s Important To You”.

I recently purchased a 2003 BMW 525i from a dealer and the last owner mounted a phone on the passenger side dash. Also there is an antenna installed on the rear window at the very top. I am not very good with these kinds of jobs but is there a website or would the owner’s manual have directions to uninstall this? Or should I take it to a professional? If so could someone estimate the cost! Thanks in advance!

I know it has a lot to do with taking care of your car. How often you change the oil, and get it serviced. But it seems that most Hondas and Toyots can last past 200k unlike most Cevrolet and Fords last barely past 100k. I was just wondering where a BMW falls in the catergory of miles.

Evander Klum asked:

DaimlerChrysler, parent automaker of Mercedes-Benz, has already signed the papers to their corporate divorce while their strong rival BMW is planning to launch a takeover bid for Volvo earlier this year as revealed by Autocar. It can be noted that most analysts have expressed their concern over mergers in the auto industry saying that it is not pragmatic. But it looks like BMW just don’t want itself to be daunted by the number of failed mergers in the industry and preferred to personally experience it.

Anyway, the Bavarian automaker and producer of high quality BMW exhaust have already requested a complete breakdown of Volvo’s financial position from a European investment bank which is handling enquiries on behalf of Ford, the owner of Volvo. Reliable sources have also revealed that BMW has earlier eyed the Alfa Romeo as its takeover target.

According to industry experts BMW is planning to expand its range of brands to support the future growth of the company. Likewise, part of its plan is underpinning the front-wheel-drive Mini division by expanding its output and it can do so with the help of Volvo.

Why Volvo? Company bosses at BMW saw Volvo as the fitting global brand complimentary to BMW, which they deemed has considerable room for growth and room to accommodate Volvo. Although BMW will always emphasize driving pleasure, Volvo on the other hand will contribute safety and environmental concerns to the mix.

At present it not yet clear what BMW plans are but its probable that the larger saloon and estate models of Volvo just in case would be switched to BMW platforms offering both rear-and four-wheel drive. The smaller cars in the Volvo’s range would remained front-drive and would probably be merged to the Mini family expanding this model range.

The Mini brand is currently one of the biggest problems of BMW and it has already been forced to allot additional investment just for the redesigning of the new Mini as well as engineering the Mini Clubman estate. But despite all the efforts Mini sales are still down on their 2005 peak and the BMW insiders admit that a total annual output of 250,000 to 270,000 cars is just not enough to secure a profitable long-term future for the Mini brand.

Potentially with Volvo, BMW could build the proposed large five-door Mini and Mini SUV on the same front-drive chassis as the future S40 and V50. And let’s just say for the sake of argument that this was done, an annual output of 500,000 upmarket Volvo and Mini front-drive cars could ensure long-term profitability.

The expectation for future profit is not new when it comes to merger in fact every one of those failed union in the auto industry is hoping for the same thing that’s why they merge in the first place. Unfortunately, none of those merges survive except for the seven years partnership between Nissan and Renault but even their union is still uncertain and nobody knows what may happen in the future.

And let us not forget that seven years ago BMW was humiliated when it incurred massive losses which forced it to split up and sell the Rover Group which it bought in 1994. The question now is: Has BMW forgets the lessons of the past or has it learned a lot to create a new successful partnership? Well only BMW can answer that.

Chet Waters asked:

Is The BMW 1 Series Really Like Falling In Love?

Absolutely.

With precision being the BMW tradition, the new 1 Series is totally ruthless in its devotion to stimulating your heartstrings. And once it has you in its embrace, your feelings of love will forever be changed. Even before you settle into the inviting comfortable seats, your heart races in anticipation of what’s to come. The very look of this BMW 1 Series makes you feel all “warm and fuzzy”.

Just like your feeling of being in love.

The BMW 1 Series is the long awaited successor to the 2002 model that was extremely popular. Even though this is the cheapest and least powerful of the BMW line, they have cut no corners in the production of the 1 Series. It has the similar content of a 3 Series or a 5 Series put into a very inviting stylish package.

Price wise the BMW 1 Series falls between their mini-lineup and the all time popular 3-Sereis. The 128i Coupe is about $29,375 while the 128i Convertible base price is set at an affordable $33,875. Both of these prices are great news to all of those BMW enthusiasts wanting exceptional value. But the fact is, even though we are all looking for great value, what we’re really after here is——-

The thrill and excitement of this fresh new face of the BMW 128i Coupe or Convertible.

Like all people in love, you’ll appreciate the subtle yet powerful aspects of the 128i that will make you realize that you have found “someone” special. While most love affairs start off slowly, you’ll find the zero to 60 at 6.4 seconds for the 128i to be “the rush” that you knew was available with the inline 6 cylinders under the hood. And at 230 horsepower, you’ll know that you have found the “love of your life”. At least in terms of your engineering desires.

Don’t worry I won’t tell anyone. Because this feeling happens to just about everyone when they fall in love with the BMW 128i. You are not alone.

It’s not all about love. There is more fun packed into this little beauty than you have a right to expect. And this fun is the extra added benefit you’ll get as you zip around corners and accelerate effortlessly on the highways of your desire.

This BMW 128i definitely isn’t something you just own.

You’ll become so emotionally attached to the “experience” that it will totally captivate your imagination. Every waking moment for you will be to enjoy “your passion”.

Don’t get me wrong. This won’t be just a short “love affair”. Likes Dracula’s bite, once you get the BMW 128i totally in your blood, your surrender will be complete. Your desire for anything less will vanish forever. And your emotions will be flooded with all the usual feelings only made possible by the BMW technology and luxury you have come to desire.

Now it’s up to you my friend.

After experiencing the BMW 128i, only you can answer the question, “Is The BMW 1-Series Really Like Falling In Love?”.

Tell me the truth. How do you feel?

Chet Waters asked:

What All BMW Dealers Won’t Tell You

You probably have had an experience like this.

You get the itch for a new or pre-owned BMW. The first thing you do is look in your local newspaper for the model you want hoping to find a great deal. So you pack up the family and go from dealership to dealership searching for the perfect BMW with the financing that meets your needs.

When you finally decide on the car you want, then the real struggle begins.

Let’s say that you want to buy a pre-owned 2006 BMW X5. And this little baby has it all: Black Leather Interior, Self-Leveling Suspension, Navigation System, Cold Weather Package, Heated Steering Wheel, 8 Cylinder 4.8 Liter Engine and on and on. The minute you saw this Imola Red honey you fell instantly in love. Now the last thing you want is a hassle over the price and the financing.

As you know, car salesmen are notorious for being aggressive and abrasive.

My experience when buying any car has always been like this. During the test drive all the salesman does is talk talk talk. He or she keeps pointing out features of the car even before they ask me what is most important to me when I buy my next car. All you want to do at this point is just get a “good feel” for the car to see if you really like it and want to buy it. That’s all you want to do at this point—-right?

Even after the test drive is over, the agony continues for you.

Most likely you will spend between two and three hours at the dealership. From haggling over the price, going back and forth between you and the sales manager,

and doing all the other paperwork—it’s a hassle. No question about it.

But here’s what your local BMW dealer won’t tell you.

There is a whole other world out there you should know about when buying a new or pre-owned BMW. There is a way where you can find exactly the BMW that you want and at a price acceptable to you. You spend no money on gas going from dealer to dealer. You don’t have to talk to any “salesman”. And you don’t have to spend hours of your valuable time putting the deal together. Sounds like a dream come true right?

Online Auctions.

That’s right. There are many websites where you can benefit from seeing thousands of new and pre-owned BMWs. You can check out the 3 Series, 5 Series, Roadsters, M Series, X Series and any other model or year made by BMW. Online auctions are probably the most overlooked source for car buyers. It doesn’t matter if you are looking to spend $8,000 or $100,000 for your BMW. Online auctions provide you with the benefits of buying safely, securely, professionally and without all the hassles.

The most popular auction site usually has from 2100 to 2500 BMWs for sale on any given day. For example, let’s take that 2006 Imora Red BMW X5 mentioned above.

On a well known auction site, here is how the listing appeared.

There were 30 detailed pictures of the cars from every angle, front, back , sides, interior, dashboard close-up, steering wheel close-up, driver seat controls, passenger A/C system, sunroof, engine, etc. In addition the potential buyers could see the VIN number, mileage, vehicle location, warranties, status of the title, plus the 88 features and options with this particular BMW X5.

Not only is nothing hidden from the potential buyers, but the buyer also gets options to order online a “Vehicle History Report” and an “Independent Inspection”. Both of these will give you peace of mind before you decide to close the deal and buy the car. In many ways an online auction is better than buying in person because it gives you more time to do your research and make a decision.

And here is a tremendous benefit to you when buying your BMW at an online auction. You get to decide exactly what price you will pay based upon your needs and the other bids offered. There is no pressure for you to pay more than you should. Plus, if you need to have your BMW shipped to you, that can also be arranged at the time of purchase.

Now you know “What All BMW Dealers Won’t Tell You”. Online auctions just might be for you.
