Chet Waters asked:

BMW and NASA. What’s This About?

The time was August 2007. The place is Cape Canaveral Florida.

An historic event took place on this date and time. The problem is that very few people realize that it even happened. And fewer people still understand the importance of this meeting of the minds between NASA engineers and the engineers at BMW.

But one day you will benefit from this union.

As NASA engineers were preparing to launch the Space Shuttle Endeavour, BMW of North America and NASA announced that together they had successfully completed an eight week test for the BMW Hydrogen 7 Luxury Sedan. And because this was the first hydrogen powered luxury sedan, their joint success brought a smile even to the faces of normally non-emotional engineers.

This was like getting s smile out of Mr. Spock on Star Trek. It was that important.

Both BMW and NASA are committed to hydrogen technologies research, innovative transportation systems and alternate energy sources. Fortunately, this program was made possible under a Space Act Agreement between NASA and BMW. I don’t know about you, but for me, I could feel the excitement of our tax dollars at work. Both you and I will someday benefit from this cutting edge research.

In simple terms, this is why BMW and NASA worked together. Because of the high density of liquid hydrogen the space shuttle is propelled at high speeds into space. This same concept is used by BMW to power the BMW Hydrogen 7. So BMW and NASA working together on this project was a perfect match. Also, this project is BMW’s way of showing that hydrogen drive vehicles are a viable option for your future and mine.

This test project was a huge success for BMW.

Not only did this prove that BMW could make a dual combustion engine that can switch from gasoline to liquid hydrogen seamlessly, but also as a far reaching model vehicle for the future. But the major drawback right now is that there are very few places where a driver can stop and fuel up on liquid hydrogen. But that isn’t going to stop BMW from pushing ahead with development of the Hydrogen 7.

So what’s the answer to all driver’s question, “Where do I get the liquid hydrogen?”

Another goal of this joint project was to make the public more aware of the great possibilities offered by a hydrogen driven car. And just as importantly, BMW is helping to stimulate the demand for a workable hydrogen infrastructure—that is—building hydrogen filling stations for your car and mine. This will one day make hydrogen for cars readily available and affordable.

For those of you looking just for the “specs” of the BMW Hydrogen 7, here is a little taste just to keep you going until you can get your hands on one at your local dealership. It’s being developed from the BMW 760Li , 260 horsepower V12 cylinder engine. Top speed for this baby is 143 mph as it quietly accelerates from 0 to 60 in 9.2 seconds.

One hundred of the Hydrogen 7 models have been build and are being tested in various markets around the world. In fact, the cars have already completed over 1.3 million miles during this testing phase.

Don’t expect to see Captain James T. Kirk from the Starship Enterprise driving one of these any time soon in your neighborhood. But, it sure would be a great promo for BMW and NASA.

Don’t you agree?

Corbin Newlyn asked:

The BMW M3 is a high performance edition of the popular compact car BMW 3-series automobile, made by BMW. The first day operating a BMW M3 can be a bit challenging, but hold on and adjust, since the payoff is worth it.

By benefiting from the outstanding overall design of the chassis components, a skilled driver in a BMW M3 can achieve an exceptionally high level of lateral acceleration. Featuring large compound disc brakes and electronic anti-lock, stopping power for the new BMW M3 is strong, precise and consistent.

The question is whether or not this handsome beast is most beneficial for your pocket? Well, numerous individuals say yes, if you have the experience on how to manage your finances the right way, and purchase the correct car for your needs. There are numerous unique generations of the BMW M3, which of course translates into the price variations as well.

If you are have a smaller budget, but still want an M3, then you should go for a used one. On the other hand if you have a higher budget range, you can go for the newer models. One thing to be keep in mind is that in luxury vehicles, older cars are in numerous respects as good as new.

There is a wide range and many styles of custom wheels to choose from, so a BMW M3 can be made as individual as the person who drives it. Now let us go through the various generations of the BMW M3.

E30

This is the earliest version of the BMW M3. Essentially as we know, the standard design of the M3, which is the sports version of the popular compact BMW 3 Series, was introduced here. The M badge carried not only the nature of this automobile being powerful, but also being stylish.

The power train was the 2.3 liters S14 engine, derived from the M10’s inline-4 block, and the valve train and head architecture from BMWs notable but then historical M1 and later the singular M6’s inline-6 cylinder. The first car resulted in 195 hp, then further retooled to 215 hp, and then to 238 hp.

The BMW M3 was initially fitted with a firmer and more aerodynamic body shell in addition to “box flared” fenders, which only the M6 had. This was basically to accommodate a wider track with bigger wheels and tires, which was typical of a muscle car.

People tend not to give much thought about the BMW M3 catalytic converter, nevertheless when it comes to the environment, it’s one of the vehicle’s most significant components. The BMW M3 is the most powerful M3 that BMW have produced this far and because of the environmental movement and recent down sizing movement possibly the most powerful that will be made until we have more environmental friendly choices to power our cars.

E36

After 6 years this version of the BMW M3 was ushered in. This E36 coupe model got the 3.0 liters straight-6 engine, which created 286 hp. Four years later, this was increased to a higher power train of 321 hp, which was derived from a new 3.2 liters. As an alternative, a new SMG gearbox was integrated. Named as one of the best models manufactured, this car is still available.

Drivers of the race-bred BMW M3 can also orient the car’s manner and performance because of the Mdrive, which is placed on the steering wheel for quick access to the vehicle setup kept in the Mdrive menu. The highly dynamic driving experience of the new BMW M3 is the outcome of the 50/50 front-rear weight distribution, rear wheel drive, recently designed chassis with specific, weight-optimized components, distinctive BMW M axle kinematics, forged aluminum track control arms, complex high-performance brake system and electronic damper control (edc).

E46

This is the most recent version of the BMW M3. The principal batch of the E46 BMW M3 came in Laguna Seca Blue, with a more current SMG Drivelogic or the SMG II, producing a power of 343 hp. The M3 is also lower in gross weight than it past models. One of the reasons for this low weight is that the newer BMW M3 is the first production car in its industry segment to feature a roof constructed of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (cfp).

Hailey Kerr asked:

BMW has recently unveiled its fourth generation BMW M3. The new BMW sports car features an eight-cylinder power unit and can reach a maximum speed of 8,400 rpm. The BMW M3 can sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers-per-hour in 4.8 seconds and obtain a top speed which is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 miles per hour. The two seat vehicle has an average consumption that is equivalent to 22.8 mile-per gallon.

The BMW M3 is a part of the BMW M Gmbh model range and has always livened up to its motorsport heritage which is reflected in the amount of power that it has. The first BMW M3 was launched in the year 1986 and continued its heritage with two subsequent model generations. And today this supremacy will once again be displayed in the 2007 version of the BMW M3.

Despite the fact that the latest generation BMW M3 was based on the new BMW M3 Coupe, still the new high-performance model vary from the regular coupe in terms of looks and technical features. And aside from the car’s unique design and its drivetrain and suspension technology which was created from the start for supreme performance, it was the lightweight technology that was made the top most priority for engineers at BMW M.

The extent on the development that transpired is translated into reality in terms of intelligent lightweight engineering which is attributed to the car’s power-to-weight ration that measures only 3.8 kg (8.4 lb) per horsepower.

One of the reasons for the new M3’s low weight is its roof made out of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic or CFP. Overall the new BMW M3 with the exception of some few components is entirely new in terms of its engineering and design concept thus reflecting the successful tradition of BMW M Gmbh.

Apart from the load-bearing structure of the car, there have been certain components that were carried over from the 3 Series Coupe such as its tow doors, the bootlid, the windows, the headlights and rear lights. All the rest of the pother body components were specifically designed and developed for the new BMW M3 just like what BMW has done for its BMW 320i parts.

The one-of-a-kind character of the new BMW M3 is evident at first glance. Its engine compartment lid with its striking powerdome and two air intake openings, the function-oriented design of the front and rear air dams, the so-called gills in the front side panels, the side-sills with its distinctive design, the roof made of clearly visble carbon fiber together with the exterior mirrors and light-alloy wheels in BMW M design clearly differentiates the new model. Its exterior with its athletic and aesthetic appeal strongly highlights the sporting qualities of the car.

The exterior paintwork also adds an individual touch, offering car aficionados with numerous colors plus an addition of four special paintwork options that are to be offered exclusive only for BMW M.

Wayne Hemrick asked:

You can get more from your ultimate sound system for your ultimate driving machine, with BMW Bluetooth kits. A BMW bluetooth adapter enables you to get more from your sound system than you dreamed possible.

Hang Up and Drive

In today’s frenetically-paced world, there are few of us that can afford to be out of touch for any length of time, which means having a cell phone ready at all times - including drive time. Unfortunately, driving and cell phones don’t always mix, and sometimes, the consequences can be fatal. In response, more states and municipalities are passing strict laws prohibiting the use of cell phones by a driver while a vehicle is in motion.

The Hands-Free Solution

BMW Bluetooth is a great solution for those who need to be reachable during drive time. A BMW Bluetooth kit from Bavarian Soundwerks uses genuine BMW components and utilizes OEM wiring and components for a “hands-off” solution. BMW Bluetooth enables you to activate, make and accept incoming calls on your cell phone without ever having to remove it from your pocket or even touch it!

A New Use for an Old Technology

The first experiments with radio waves date back to the late1880s, when Nikola Tesla and Gugliemo Marconi began early attempts to achieve wireless communication. However, it took almost thirty years before the first real radio was made available to the public.

BMW Bluetooth technology is based on the work of two Swedish engineers starting in the 1990s. It is essentially the use of low frequency, low bandwidth radio waves that allows an astonishing variety of digital devices to “talk” to each other.

Today, Bluetooth is used to network personal computers, printers, modems, digital cameras, and even game consoles. The first use however was for “hands free” devices that would allow drivers to use cell phones safely while the car was in motion.

It’s Fully Integrated

With a BMW Bluetooth retrofit or installation kit, your cell phone can actually “talk” to - and through - your car’s radio. If your cell phone supports such features (and most newer ones do), you’ll even be able to activate your phone with voice commands and display data (such as phone numbers) on your vehicle’s instrument displays!

It works both ways, as well. You won’t miss incoming calls because you’re listening to music or other programming through your radio; BMW Bluetooth technology allows your cell phone to automatically mute whatever is on the radio when a call is made or received.

Easy and Affordable

A BMW Bluetooth installation or retrofit kit from Bavarian Soundwerks is affordable and easy to install. You’ll receive clear, simple instructions with your kit, and all necessary parts are included.

Contact Bavarian Soundwerks today - with just a few bits of information about your BMW 3 Series, 5 Series or X5 vehicle, they’ll have the right BMW Bluetooth kit in your hands in no time.

Chet Waters asked:

5 Things You Don’t Know About BMW

Most people think that they know everything they need to know about BMW when they go to the dealership, read about BMW in Consumer Reports or Car & Driver magazine or go online and do some “research”. You can’t go wrong by doing any of those things.

But the truth is my friend, there is so much more to the BMW experience than just the usual brochures and information.

When you own a BMW you’re not just buying a luxury car. You’re buying a tradition of quality and excellence. And to show you what I mean, let me tell you about some “little known” insider information about BMW. This is going to be like a trip through your family tree. And just like you are the way you are because of all members of your family that came before you, the same is true of BMW.

Why should you care about any of this?

First, just like you, every BMW has its own special personality that started almost a century ago in 1913. Even then the obsessive need to create great mechanical machines was born. And like most true stories of “greatness”, BMW has its roots in failure. Karl Rapp started the company as an aircraft engine manufacturer. With a gleam in his eye and a dream in his heart, his watched as his aircraft engines struggled to overcome vibration problems.

But all would not end well for Karl.In about three years the dreams of Karl Rapp were dead.

The financial problems of the company were just like a bullet through his heart. And there was no way he could survive this massive trauma. So in 1916 he sells out to Franz -Josef Popp and Max Fritz. For the next four years the company does well with the aircraft engine business. But it was not enough.

As the old saying goes, the only thing that stays the same is “change”.

Secondly, BMW started building motorcycles in 1921. And the reason this is important to you dear reader is because this was another turning point for the company. During the next six years the company has great success with its R32 and R37 motorcycles. In fact from 1924 to 1929 all German championships in the 500 ccm category were won by BMW. Can the vehicle you drive today boast of such an inspiring heritage?

1928 was a very good year. This was the year in which all descendants of every BMW model in existence today began to take shape. For like all visionaries, the owners of the company knew they had to find other markets for their engines because the world economy was changing. And they needed to change with it.

Why is the factory at Eisenach/Thuringia important to you?

Because, and this is the third thing you don’t know about BMW, this was the first factory the company owned that was licensed to build small cars. It’s sort of like saying what hospital you were born in and on what date. Do you feel the connection?

The fourth thing you don’t know about BMW is that 1932 was the first year the company entirely developed the first model BMW called the AM4. With this car BMW wins the Concours d’Elegance in Baden-Baden. Not a bad start for a car that would become a legend—-right?

And finally, the fifth thing you don’t know about BMW is that in 1933 BMW introduced the 303 saloon. This was the first inline-six cylinder engine produced by the company. This configuration is still in use in many more recent models.

Now you can no longer say that there are, “5 Things You Don’t Know About BMW”.
