Shaun Parker asked:

Because of the way a BMW will hold its value, most used BMW’s are re-sold but, like anything, they do have a life span and at the end of that they’re on the scrapheap.

Or are they?

BMW are the most environmentally friendly car manufacturer in existence. Their South Carolina plant in the US has been named a charter member of the US Environmental Protection Agencys National Performance Track. They have recieved this prestigious accolade because of their recycling initiative when it comes to used BMW’s.

A recycling centre for used BMW’s at the end of their life has won the 1992 Best Recycling Innovation Award. 85% of a scrapped vehicle is recyclable, going back into creating the next BMW on the production line. The other 15% is re-used. Tyres are sent to cement kilns for fuel and even paint sludge is used as waste energy. Outside recycling companies used are subject to regular audits from BMW to ensure they are doing exactly what they claim to.

But the environmental concerns of this company are not confined to used BMW’s. It starts right at the beginning. The BMW South Carolina plant is leading the way in protecting the very air that we breath. Before building even began on their factory, consultants and experts were brought in to assess the risk of construction on surrounding wetlands and wildlife. Bird and bat houses were installed in surrounding woodland as well as an on site butterfly garden.

The South Carolina Plant of BMW is called the Information Technology Research Centre and in itself is a green building. Wherever possible, environmentally friendly materials have been used and every supplier involved with the construction project was subjected to sustainability evaluations to ensure they complied with the BMW environmental ethos.

Long term assessments from BMW have found that the company produces 17.8 million pounds worth of waste per year but through an aggressive recycling programme across the board, 14 million of that waste was recycled.

All 3,600 tonnes of cardboard that goes through the BMW plant every year is recycled along with all paper, every piece of scrap metal, all surplus wood, plastic, rubber, paint sludge, fluorescent light tubes and oil.
Its all very well being able to recycle the waste products of a business but what about the environmental impact of actually using the materials not wasted? BMW have taken this into account too, actively moving forward in all aspects.

Their landfill gas to energy project is years ahead of rival companies. Where other companies create energy at the landfill site then project it down wires to their business, thus creating more emissions, BMW use local landfill sites and pipe the methane gas directly to the plant. This process fuels 23 paint shop oven burners and supplies BMW with 63% of its total energy needs. The reduction in carbon monoxide emissions is equivalent to taking 61,000 cars off the US highway every year.

Moving down the production line, reducing the water used in the BMW factory was an area of concern, specifically in the paint shop. A reduction of 10% was aimed for but 30% was the actual achievement saving 9.5 million gallons of water per year. This equates to enough water to supply every single citizen in the US with a 4oz glass of water.

Down to the very last detail, BMW is forging ahead with looking after the environment. From recycling their rags to make insulation under the interior of their vehicles to ensuring food and drink containers in their canteen are bio-degradeable, it is so much more than just recycling a used BMW.

Chet Waters asked:

Why The History Of BMW Motorcycles Means Adventure For You

If you love the BMW brand like I do, your enjoyment of the company isn’t complete without a brief history of their motorcycles. Over the years I have found that only a handful of people are even aware that BMW made motorcycles. Being so totally captivated by the current BMW car models, motorcycles by BMW have sort of become the “redheaded stepchild” of the business.

But, I plan to change that image right now.

Between 1920 and 1922 the Bavarian Motor Work made their first two-stroke three port motorcycle engine. At only 148 cc, this engine was affectionately called the Flink. With the engine mounted just in front of the foot pedals, this first model looked more like just a bicycle.

BMW had to start somewhere with its design and this was as good a place as any.

In the beginning, the Chief Design Engineer for BMW was Max Friz. Known for being demanding and not being satisfied with things as they are, Max introduced the new model BMW R32 at the Paris Motor Show in 1932. This model became famous for their blue and white paint.

Such developments as the pressed steel frame, telescopic fork, tubular frame and telescopic rear suspension all were important advances from 1935 to 1939. Can you imagine how different the ride must have felt back in the “old days” without modern tires and suspensions? Ouch.

1955 was really the next milestone for the BMW Motorcycle. Production models for the RS racing bike with the all pivot frame was introduced.

Do you know what the “slash five” was in BMW history?

Probably one of the most important upgrades to BMW motorcycles took place in 1970 with the development of the “slash five” series. The R50/5, R60/5 and R75/5 all have the same stroke engines only with different displacements. In addition, all these models had point ignitions. In 1979 these models were laid to rest and discontinued.

A new age begins for the BMW Motorcycle in 1980.

If you listen closely to the sounds of history, you might hear cheering fans as they applauded the latest improvements such as, updated suspensions, strengthened frames and electronic ignition replaced the points. High performance Brembo brakes and elimination of the heavy flywheel in favor of a stamped steel clutch carrier, were major advances at this time

.

Why were these changes made to BMW motorcycles?

It all comes down to money. If BMW wanted to continue in the motorcycle business it was mandatory that they make changes in order to be more competitive with the Japanese and European bikes. In fact, the 1981 model was so much better than previous versions that the market for used BMW motorcycle was totally destroyed.

The fact is, everything BMW is about excitement and adventure.

You can prove this for yourself just by this little study of BMW history. The GS series motorcycle was introduced in 1981 and instantly labeled the “Adventure Touring Bike” . The whole concept of the “Adventure Tour Market” started with the BMW R80G/S. And what an adventure it has been ever since.

From 1985 to the present, much advancement has been made. Unfortunately, that story will have to wait and be the subject of one of my future articles.

So for now my friend, are you up for the adventure of a BMW motorcycle?

Chet Waters asked:

The BMW 135i Coupe Love Affair

The new BMW 135i Coupe has all the trappings of a BMW champion.

What you hear most often from BMW drivers are such feelings as passion, excitement and exhilaration. Throw in the word “performance” and the experience is unforgettable. When you put all those words together they can only mean one thing. The “BMW Experience” is all it’s cracked up to be and then some.

The fact is that BMW owners buy out of love for the vehicle, not out of any sense of logic or statistics. Just because the BMW 135i Coupe has 300 horsepower, 3.0- liter, turbocharged inline 6-cyclinder engine and an estimated EPA 25 MPG highway is not enough to make you open your wallet and fork over some green.

Because the BMW 135i Coupe is the new look of fast, that’s what really gets your motor running and your blood pumping. Just imagine your “adrenaline rush” as you sit behind the wheel of this puppy as it goes from zero to 60 in about 5.1 seconds. If that doesn’t let you know that you’re alive nothing will.

I know that you are the type of person who likes to be in control. So listen up.

One of the great innovations of the BMW 135i Coupe is what they call the “Dynamic Stability Control” system. The benefit that this system offers you is that no matter what the road conditions or circumstances, you will always be able to maintain maximum control. Gone are the days when you had to figure out which way to steer the wheel in an emergency situation when you lost control of your car.

Here’s how you’ll benefit from the BMW 135i Coupe “Dynamic Stability Control”. Not only is it creative, but it can also save your life. Check this out, because this is something that you really need to know.

The onboard brain in this beauty constantly monitors your speed, yaw, driving angle, brake pressure and traction. And once the sensors detect that you have a problem maintaining control, it helps you to correct the loss of wheel traction instantly. If you are like me, you’ll call this system “Peace Of Mind” for you and your family. BMW 135i Coupe owners agree this is a great benefit.

Now for all you geeks out there let me feed your “analytical hunger”.

In 2003 BMW introduced a feature called “Active Steering”. Not only did drivers love it, but it got the innovation “Award Of German Industry” too. And believe me when I tell you , that is no easy thing to get. At low speeds steering is 10:1 for easy handling in tight spaces. At higher speeds the ratio is 18:1 for increased stability. Most other car companies keep a 14:1 steering ratio constant. But with your BMW 135i Coupe there is no compromising.

Remember, it’s the attention to details that count.

As a consumer, you are the one best to judge if the BMW 135i Coupe meets your standards and satisfies your demanding lifestyle. But, I’m sure you’ll agree that because BMW is an independent company that encourages creative thinking, you won’t be disappointed.

Your automotive love affair has begun.

My 1998 BMW 328i shudders slightly when I accelerate from a dead stop or when I accelerate from a roll below 5 mph. The shuddering starts at around 5 mph and between 1700 and 2200 rpm. The shuddering feels as if it is coming from the rear passenger wheel and it abates once I’ve passed 10 mph.
